When we are about 13 years old, we might start getting attracted to people of the opposite sex. This is normal. Most of us feel this way. This attraction to the opposite sex comes hand in hand with all the other changes that we go through when we reach puberty, such as the physical and hormonal changes.

All our lives we have had relationships – with our parents, siblings and friends. But sometimes we might feel a certain void in our lives. You might sometimes feel that your parents are too busy to pay attention to you or that your friends are engaged in other things and really don’t have time for you. Sometime you might feel that life would be better if you had that special someone to to talk about your concerns and share your thoughts. This feeling in itself is not a problem. Most people like to have a special relationship and share their lives with another person.
However we need to evaluate why we start a relationship and what we expect from it. We might start a relationship expecting to get comfort, solace and love. If you are respected, treated as an equal in the relationship, and not pressurized to do anything that you are not comfortable then the relationship is a positive one. Sometimes relationships between two people might last a lifetime, but only as a friendship. There is no sexual attraction. This is not the person that you want to spend the rest of your life with.

The person that you want to spend the rest of your life with will have many positive qualities that attract you to them. In addition you will be sexually attracted to them. If a relationship is based on mutual respect, understanding and if the partners treat other as real equals then the relationship is strong and positive.
However as teens we have to think very carefully about whether we are ready to start a relationship with one particular person. There are many reasons why serious thought has to be given to this question. Firstly starting a relationship with someone requires a time commitment. Secondly this is a critical time period for you in terms of your education. You might be getting ready to sit for your O/Ls or your A/Ls. If you are able to lay a solid foundation for your education during these years then your future becomes more secure. Thirdly during this period of your life you may have other commitments such as extra curricular activities, including sports that you want to pay attention to.
So while a strong and positive relationship with a significant other adds to our overall well-being, think twice about whether you are ready to start a relationship during your teenage years.
